From July 25 to September 23, the News of this blood rain was found in different places of the different parts of the district. There have been several reports of blood rain in the region since 1897. From November 15 to December 26, 2012, blood rain news came from different parts of East and South Central of Sri Lanka. Eye witnesses said a sound was heard before the rain and the sky was filled with bright light. The rains caused the leaves to fall off and gray burn marks to appear on the leaves. It rained for only a few kilometers. Most of the rain time was 10 to 20 minutes. About 9 million red particles were found per kilometer of rain. As such, 50,000 kilograms of particles came down with rainwater.
Scientists of the Center for Earth Science Studies (CESS) had launched an investigation. Who initially blamed the meteor explosion for this rain. They said, From a meteorite explosion, a few tons of meteorites had mixed with the clouds and fall with the rain. But it was not so reasonable. Because scattered meteorites over the stratosphere can never come down to the same place repeatedly with rain.
scientists also noticed some spores in the rain sample a few days later. So they assigned the investigation to the Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI). They observed the sample and after the observation, in November 2001 CESS and TBGRI released a report on behalf of Indian Government. Excessive levels of Trentepohlia species lichen in the area had been blamed for the red color of the rain, according to the report.
